My Great-grandfather Samuel Mudd:
Another Victim of the Lincoln Assassination

Mary Mudd McHale

Mary McHale is the great-granddaughter of Dr. Samuel A. Mudd, granddaughter of Dr. Thomas Mudd, and daughter of Dr. Richard Mudd, the Mudd family genealogist who, for more than 70 years, led the fight to clear his grandfather’s name.

A native of Detroit, Mary grew up in Cincinnati, San Antonio and Saginaw, Mich. She earned a bachelor's at St. Marys College, Notre Dame, and a masters in library science from Catholic University.

She married a Notre Dame man, John Jack McHale, a special agent with the FBI and chief of police for Prince Georges County, Maryland. Thanks to marrying a Mudd, Jack developed an interest in the Lincoln Assassination, wrote a biography of Sam Mudd, and gave talks on the Assassination, always declaring the innocence of Dr. Mudd.

For more than fifty years, the McHales have lived in a home near Andrews Air Force Base, about halfway between Fords Theatre and the Dr. Mudd House. Jack died in 2004, but Mary is still there. She has retired as a school librarian, spends time with her children and grandchildren, writes a weekly newspaper column, and serves on the board of the Dr. Samuel A. Mudd House in Southern Maryland.
